Horse nutrition: Do you know what your horse's nutritional needs are?

Horse nutrition is about feeding your horse what he needs to thrive. What should you feed your horse? The answer is not as simple as it seems. We all know horses need hay, but which type is best for which breed? And how much should be fed daily? What about feed concentrates? Are they really necessary? Is it true that they make thoroughbreds "hot"?
Here are the basics of what all horses need in their diet.
Here are more specific tips for a quality horse feeding regimen.

Why Horses Need the RIGHT amount of Vitamin E.

Horses that are in training need adequate nutrition to recover from workouts, build muscle, and nourish brain tissue. This usually means that your horse care regimen should include the optimum intake of vitamin E for horses.

According to the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology (Dec 2008) and Journal of Equine Science 2006: A deficiency of vitamin E makes it easier for pathogens to get past the blood-brain barrier, thereby allowing them to infect a horse’s brain. A horse infected with EPM, for example, doesn’t get sick until the pathogen crosses that barrier and invades the brain and spinal cord.

You've always heard that you should feed your horse hay first, then grain. But is it true?

This is what objective research shows.
