Here are photos of plants toxic to horses.

There are many plants toxic to horses. Here, we focus on trees that are toxic to horses. (Source: TheHorse.com April 1, 2002)

The ironic thing is that these trees are among the types that landscapers and nurseries may carry in abundance and recommend to you. For example, red maples trees are not only very attractive, but they provide ample shade. Too bad that they also are toxic to horses.

Cherry and plum trees are lovely for their color and ornamentation. But again, horses will find them lovely and yummy as well. Despite the fact that they are toxic.

Oak and black walnut trees are a natural part of most wooded areas. But they can cause serious health problems in horses. Black walnut in particular can cause a horse to founder (laminitis). NEVER use black walnut shavings for horse bedding.

Also NEVER put a horse water trough under these trees. The leaves and petals they drop will fall in the water and make your horse sick.

Study the photos closely. Then take a walk around your property. Are these trees anywhere your horses graze?

Black Walnut: Shavings made from black walnut trees causes founder and laminitis.

Red Maple: A toxin in the leaves destroys red blood cells.

Cherry Tree: Contains cyanide, which prevents cells from absorbing and using oxygen.

Plum Tree: Same as cherry tree.

Oak: Contains tannins that cause colic.
