Recommended Horse Blankets

Want to cut down on your horse feed bills in the winter? Want to spend less time grooming and more time riding? Then blanket your horse!

Horses burn hundreds of calories just to keep warm in the winter months. In addition to generating heat, those calories are used to grow a thick coat of hair to keep warm, meaning you have to spend a LOT of time grooming your horse before you can even think of putting a saddle on him. Do yourself a favor: Blanket your horse. You'll save time and money.

Money Saving Tip: If you live where winter temperatures drop very low (below 20 degrees), I'd recommend buying two medium weight blankets rather than buying a medium and a heavy weight. That way, you can just double blanket when the temps drop very low rather than having to switch out blankets.

For more details about why blanketing is important, click here and here. For information about how to choose and fit a horse blanket, click here.

Here are blankets that I recommend. Click on the title for more information and to purchase.

Rambo Original Turnout Blankets
Hands down, these are the best for your money because they last for years. They are incredibly tough, even for horses who like to "party hard" in the pasture.

Rambo Supreme Vari-Layer Turnout Blankets
The clever thing about these blankets is that they have a detachable inner layer that can be added or removed to fit the temperature. The hood is also detachable. Sturdy, rugged. Rambos last for years. They better be because this one is really pricey!

Amigo Turnout Blankets
Less expensive than Rambo, but reliably tough. This is a medium weight blanket. If you live where winter temperatures drop very low (below 20 degrees), I'd recommend buying two rather than buying a medium and a heavy weight. That way, you can just double blanket when the temps drop very low rather than having to switch out blankets.

WeatherBeeta Turnout Blankets

Much less expensive than either Rambo or Amigo, but reliably tough.

WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Airflow II Fly Sheet
Some horses just can't handle fly bites. The bites raise welts, leaving the poor horse feeling miserable and rolling around on the ground trying to scratch. This is a pretty decent fly sheet that will keep the flies off.

Tough 1 Horse Fleece Cooler
Fleece coolers are great things to have on hand. The fleece material is warm as wool without added bulk, providing insulation and comfort for horses. Customers mention the fabric is soft, thick, and comfortable.
