Why Horses Need The RIGHT Amount of Vitamin E
Keeping an adequate level of vitamin E in your horse's diet is absolutely essential for his immune system. A deficiency of vitamin E makes it easier for pathogens (bacteria, parasites, and viruses) to get past the blood-brain barrier, thereby allowing them to infect a horse’s brain. A horse infected with EPM, for example, doesn’t get sick until the pathogen crosses that barrier and invades the brain and spinal cord. An 1,100 lb horse needs about 500 IUs of vitamin E daily. From the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology (Dec 2008), and the Journal of Equine Science (2006).
