Sally shivered as she sipped her morning coffee, looking out her kitchen window at the snow-laden trees and streets. She loved riding her horse, but was it safe for her sweet mare to exercise in such cold weather?
Many horse owners believe that wintertime is “down-time” for horses. Give them a rest, then start up riding again in the spring.
But is that what’s best for you and your horse?

But is that what’s best for you and your horse?
You might be tempted to give your horse some "down-time" during winter. But studies show that, without regular winter exercise, muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, and overall flexibility significantly decrease.
This is true even if daily turnout is provided. As horses grow older, it takes more time and effort for them to return to their previous fitness levels each spring.
So riding your horse in winter is a good thing for your horse—and for you!
